Dirt was written and produced by the Putnam Theatre Alliance. Performances took place in three repurposed venues; The Philipstown Depot Theater, Arts on the Lake, and Tompkins Corner Cultural Center. Dirt digs deep into this region’s history, exploring the lives of a Native American chief, an enslaved miller, and a wealthy heiress – along with the struggle for land ownership between them.
The goal of the set design was to create an envelope that was of the land the play discusses that was able to be easily transferred to two other venues. The main playing area is kept empty to represent the plot of land being fought over. Through the scene changes, the characters are able to physically embody the displacement of each group by displaying the cyclical relinquishment and reacquisition of their land.
